Description

A handsome example of Claudio Duchetti's rare view of Jerusalem.

Duchetti's fine modern view of Jerusalem shows the city from the west. Laor noted that the view is likely based upon Stefano Du Perac's view of 1570, also published in Rome.

The map is richly annotated, identifying a number of place names and historical points of interest, including Jewish, Christian, and Islamic religious landmarks.

The present example includes the imprint of Henricus (Hendrick) van Schoel when he acquired the plates from Orlandi. Giovanni Orlandi published the view having acquired it from Duchetti in 1602. All editions are very rare.

Bifolco and Ronca note that the plate was acquired by Francesco de Paoli in 1633, and that he may have altered it and printed it, creating a fourth state, but that no example of this state is currently known.

Condition Description
Margins expertly reinstated, just touching the neatline on the right edge.
Reference
Bifolco & Ronca (2018) 202, state 3 (of possibly 4); Tooley #339; Laor #1012 (Duchetti edition) and #1014.
