Description

A 1960s IDF Map of the Hotly-Contested Suez-Sinai Region.

SECRET-rated, Hebrew-language, two-sheet Israeli Defense Forces map of the Suez Canal and north Sinai region.

The base map is from the 1924 Ordinance Survey of Palestine, with revisions from 1953 to 1963. The map was probably the most authoritative and detailed map (at least at the 1:250,000 scale) available at the time of both the Suez Crisis (in an earlier edition) and the Six Days War.

The map shows at least 11 airfields arrayed on the Egyptian side of the Suez Canal in defense of the area.

There is extensive information about topography, military installations, transportation, and oases, in this otherwise poorly-mapped region.

While it would make sense the map would be in four sheets and cover all of the Sinai Peninsula, the keys at the bottom right of both maps suggest it is complete in two sheets, as here.

The maps include messages from the Israeli Police and Military Police that the maps must be returned to the nearest station.

Condition Description
Two sheets, unjoined. Old folds with minor wear.
