Detailed Map of New York with Ethnic Joke Book Advertising on inner folder

Scarce map of the Boroughs and Environs of New York City.

Published in the early 1910s, the map provides a fine depiction of Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens Boroughs in blue, red, green and yellow, with transit lines highlighted in red.   "Subway Express Stations," "Subway Local Stations," "Elevated Stations," "Surface Lines" and "Steam Railroads" are also marked in red.

While the map notes that it was "Published & Copyrighted by A. Humitsch," it seems to be the novelty and joke book publisher Wehman Bros.'s promotional work.

Verso of the card stock wrapper depicts the covers of 18 of Wehman Bros. more typical productions, namely riddles, tricks, toasts and mainly off-color joke books aimed specifically at and sure to offend just about every ethnic group.  The inner covers includes advertising for:

  • Coon Jokes
  • Hebrew Jokes
  • Dutch Jokes
  • Vaudeville Jokes
  • Stage Jokes
  • Irish Jokes
  • Irish Yarns
  • Witty Sayings
  • and more...
