Description

Nice example of the second edition of Herrera's map of South America, first published in Madrid in 1601.

The map provides an early primitive depiction of the Amazon, with no reference to the Orinoco River. The Straits of Magellan are shown as the only passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific, predating by more than a decade the discovery of the Straits of Le Maire.

The map is one of the earliest maps of South America based upon entirely Spanish source. Its simple outline nature reflects the implementation of the Spanish secrecy laws regarding the geography of its colonial interests.
