Description

Scarce engraved 18th-century map of Africa, important for its depiction of many pre-colonial African kingdoms. The map was published in London between 1794 and 1798.

The map shows many African kingdoms but little trace of European colonialism that would dominate the cartography of the 19th century. The map names "Nigritia or Negroland" and the "Slave Coast".

In the lower left-hand corner is an attempt at "A Methodical Division of Africa".
