Description

Not Recorded in Reps.

Rare and attractive color-lithographed bird's eye view of Santa Rosa, California, not recorded by Reps in Views and Viewmakers of Urban America.

The view looks north-northeast covering the old city center, just north of Santa Rosa Creek, all the way to the peaks in the distance, namely Mount St. Helena, Hood Mountain, and Geyser Peaks. The perspective is much the same as that of the 1885 Elliot & Co. view of the city, though the coverage is expanded and the development of the city has progressed considerably.

The key below the view enumerates 41 points of interest, including a winery, brewery, tamale factory, hop fields, etc.

The color lithography by Crocker & Co. is vibrant and evidently incorporated more than half a dozen stones to accomplish the tonal range of the print.

Rarity

We are aware of a single institutional example of the print, at the California State Library (1999-0158). No copies can be located through OCLC, nor was the view recorded by Reps. We are aware of one other copy having gone through the private market in recent years. Of the three extant copies of the view, this is by far the best example.
