Description

Rare 1726 edition of Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas' map of the Southern United States, Mexico, Central American and the Caribbean, from his Descripcion de las Indias Occidentalis, first published as part of his Historia General, in Madrid in 1601.

The map is based upon manuscripted charts derived from Juan Lopez de Velasco, between 1575 and 1580, of which four copies have survived. The lack of detail is consistent with the Spanish policy of secrecy with respect to their discoveries in the New World.

This edition of the map is most easily identified by the listing of Florida in two places.

Rarity

This edition was unknown to Burden at the time of printing of Volume I of his Mapping of North America. Burden notes the map for the first time in his Addenda and Corrigenda to Volume II of his Mapping of North America.
