Illustrating The Arrival of Electric Street Cars In Atlanta

Rare early map of the City of Atlanta, printed in Atlanta by Budden & Son and drawn by E.H. Hyde.  The map is one of the first large format maps of Atlanta and the earliest map to illustrate the newly created Electric Street Car lines in Atlanta.

The map illustrates the earliest buildings in downtown Atlanta, along with the Union Depot and various train and street car lines crossing at the center of town.  Buildings illustrated include:

  • New State Capitol
  • County Court House
  • Markham House
  • Kimball House
  • Gate City Police Station
  • Chamber of Commerce
  • Maddox & Rucker Building
  • James March Building
  • Chamberlain and Johnson Building
  • Atlanta High School
  • Customs House
  • Operat House
  • Atlanta Cotton Factory
  • Traders Bank
  • Governors Mansion
  • C.C. Club
  • Fulton County Jail
  • Numerous Schools and Churches

The map illustrates Joel Hurt's Atlanta & Edgewood Street Railroad Co., constructed in 1886, with  service out Edgewood Avenue to Hilliard and Highland and to Inman Park.  In 1889, Hurt established Atlanta's first electric line, which ran between Five Points and Inman Park.  The Fulton County Street RR Co. also started it Nine-Mile Circle line to what is now Virginia Highland, powered by an electric Thomson-Houston system.

E.H. Hyde also produced a map of Atlanta for E.Y. Clarke's rare Illustrated History of Atlanta in 1877. Clarke describes Hyde as an Atlanta artist.

E.H. Hyde is identified as a "special artist" working for the Atlanta Constitution in an article published October 31, 1875 on an expedition into the Okefenokee.
