Description

Pictorial map which forms part of a text directed towards the common reader about the arts. By the prolific author Hendrik Willem van Loon, a Dutch-American Cornell graduate, renowned for his ability to put complex ideas into sketches.

The body of the map portrays the flow of artistic ideas through Europe. Arrows indicate how cultures influenced each other through time. Suggests a flow of art starting in Greece and going through Italy, France, Germany and culminating in 18th century Austria. Sketches of the most famous buildings, paintings and musical innovations dot the map. Recognizes only a limited influence of art from outside Europe, with "Porcelain" and "Rugs" being two of the only contributions, but acknowledges that China and India have "their art."

Includes abundant other information on the map. There is a table of major events, thinkers and innovations through time in Europe in the top. The left-hand side portrays what must be van Loon's idea of the hierarchy of society, with politics and science being the rock upon which the tree of art grows.

Overleaf is the cover of the book this map was published in. Includes some sketches and a brief summary of van Loon's work.
