Description

An Early Memphis Birdseye View Published in Memphis

Rare view of Memphis, Tennessee, published as a supplement to the Memphis Appeal, October 15, 1887.

The map shows an up-close view of the paddlewheeler's on the river, with a bustling waterfront scene of horse drawn carts, cargo and supplies, a rail line servicing the waterfront and the city spreading out beyond.

The view was prepared by engraver and wood engraver Lewis B. Folger, who was active in Cincinnati from 1878 to 1900.  Folger was a staff artist for the Cincinnati Enquirer in 1883 and also made maps.

Rarity

This is the first time we have ever seen the view offered for sale.  We locate no institutional examples, although there is an example posted on wikimedia:   https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Memphis_-_Bird%27s_Eye_View_-_Memphis_Appeal_15_October_1887.jpg
