Description

Scarce map of western Africa illustrating the travels of Gaspard Theodore Mollien to the sources of the Senegal and Gambia Rivers.

The map covers modern day Senegal and Gambia along with Mauritania, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and Mali, naming numerous African tribes and nations. The map delineates Mollien's route through the region.

Mollien was one of the earliest explorers of the interiors of western Africa. Starting in Saint-Louis in Senegal in 1817 (route shown on map) he traveled for 2 years, exploring Senegal, Guinea and Portuguese Guinea, in an unsuccessful attempt to discover the sources of the Senegal, Gambia and Niger Rivers, becoming one of the first Europeans to contact the tribes of this region.
