Description

Important post-war U.K. War Office groundcover map of Hong Kong, this being the first bilingual edition of the map.

The map differentiates between "Woodland", "Scrub", "Rough Grassland and scrub under 12 inches", "Badlands, heavily eroded", "Arable", "Swamp", "Houses with gardens", "Built-up area. Camps, Cemeteries, etc. Agriculturally unproductive."

A note in the lower-left corner establishes that this is the 4th edition in which Chinese characters have been added.

Harbour of Hong Kong

This is an attractive antique view of Hong Kong harbour, drawn by an Englishman in the first half of the 19th century. The view shows the harbour in the distance, framed by tall mountains. In the foreground, merchants and peasants dressed in traditional garments carry their goods to and from the bay. Small fishing vessels sail through the bay, with larger European and Chinese ships stationed in the background. The view is tastefully colored and delicately engraved.
