Description

A superb collection of 33 pen and ink and gouache drawings of World War I battlefields, a third of which are bird's eye views, and the remaining are manuscript maps.  The drawings were evidently made as artwork to illustrate an as-of-yet-unidentified contemporary French publication documenting the First World War.

In terms of artistry and detail, the collection is unsurpassed as a World War I archive to have appeared on the market in recent decades; the artist "H.M." was clearly a professional illustrator with a flair for cartography. His body of work elucidates the contemporary French understanding of many of the large and dramatic clashes of the Great War, as well as some of the fascinating, if less-well-remembered, smaller battles.

World War I maps of serious antiquarian merit have been missing from the market in recent years, and so this collection presents an important opportunity for an institution or private collection to add coverage of one of the most important conflicts in human history.
