Description

Highly detailed military reconnaissance map of the area around Tunis, published by the French Army's Geographical Service.

The map was issued at the time when Tunisia had just become a French protectorate  (May 12, 1881), when the ruling Sadik Bey (1859–1882) signed the Treaty of Bardo (Al Qasr as Sa'id). Later in 1883 his younger brother and successor 'Ali Bey signed the al-Marsa Convention. The Conventions of La Marsa, signed in 1883, by Bey Ali Muddat ibn al-Husayn, formally established the French protectorate.
