Description

Superb color-printed map of Seattle focusing on the expansion of the city in the last quarter of the 19th century. The map was published in Seattle in 1891, with cartography of the City Engineer Albro Gardner.

The map includes an explanation of the territorial changes it illustrates: as the city was incorporated on December 2nd, 1869; as it was amended on November 12th, 1875; the annexations of November 28th, 1883, and the annexations of October 1890.  Seattle's city limits would continue expanding after the production of this map.

The map precedes the major cuts through to Lake Union and Lake Washington that would take place in the first decades of the 20th century.

The map covers Seattle north to just above Green Lake, and east to the far side of Lake Washington including Medina and Mercer Island.

Albro Gardner was both King County Engineer and City Engineer for Seattle. A street, Albro Place, in Seattle, was named in his honor. He was the founding partner of Gardner & Fischer.
