Description

Compiled and Drawn by Famed Texas Mapmaker Charles W. Pressler

Important early map of the cattle and wagon route from Austin and Bastrop, Texas to Yuma Arizona and the Colorado River, published by the Army Corps of Topographical Engineers.

Carl Wheat spends nearly a full page describing the map. Beginning at Austin, Texas on the Colorado River, the map shows a route via Fredericksburg, Fort Mason, Fort Concho, the Horsehead Crossing of the Pecos, Fort Stockton, Fort Davis and Fort Quitman, then up to Fort Selden in New Mexico and west via Fort Cummings, Camp Mimbres, Fort Bowie, Tucson, Sacaton, the Maricopa Valley and Wells, and Rinyon Station to Yuma.

In New Mexico, the map extends as far north as Forts Stanton and Conrad, in Arizona it reaches beyond Fort McDowell.

The map references maps of Texas published by Pressler and Gillespie and Gildart's Journal of the Route from Ft. Conchas to Fort Yuma.

A marvelous and highly detailed map, noting water holes, grazing areas, missions, camps, Indian villages, and mines.
