Pre-Cook Contact With New Zealand?
Decorative double hemisphere map of the World
New Zealand and Van Diemen's Land are shown as attached, with the Bay de St. Philippe in New Zealand shown. The appearance of Baye de S. Philippe is as yet unexplained and may support a Maori oral tradition that another as yet unknown European ship arrived before Cook.
Shows California as an island, a continuous Northeast Coast of Asia reaching nearly to Alaska, incomplete Australia and no Southern (Antarctic) continent.
Several curious features include:
- the placement of Louisiana to the west of the Great Lakes.
- Florida is at the mouth of the Mississippi River
In the Pacific, a list of early explorers is noted:
- Magellan 1519
- Drake 1577
- Cavendish 1586
- Noort 1598
- Schouten 1615
- Tasman's Voyage in 1642 is noted in the Indian Ocean.
