Description

Fine example of R.W. Schultheis' rare map of the San Diego Zoo.

The artwork is by Schultheis and the lithography was by Frye & Smith of San Diego. We were unable to find any information on the map's maker.

The map/view shows a bird's eye view of the Zoo, shortly after World War II. There is a cover panel with Zebras, along with a two panel street map of San Diego and a colorful four panel bird's eye Artist rendition view of Balboa Park. This image shows many buildings from the Panama California Exposition held in 1915 and buildings from the California Pacific International Exposition, that was held in 1935 and 1936.

The San Diego Zoo is a privately operated zoo run by the nonprofit Zoological Society of San Diego. The zoo opened its doors officially in 1916, after the Panama-California International Exposition abandoned its exotic animal exhibitions.

The Zoological Society of San Diego was founded by Dr. Harry M. Wegeforth in an October 12, 1916 meeting, with Dr. Wegeforth serving as president of the society until 1941. In August 1921, a permanent tract of land in Balboa Park was set aside and the zoo began to move the following year.
