A Pre-Internet Guide To The Booksellers of Marin County (and Libraries)

Lively pictorial map of Marin County, promoting the locations of libraries, bookstores and associations in the county, with a pirate's treasure theme.

One of the passages in the text is a wonderful ephemeral snapshot of the roll of the independent bookseller and open shop:

Independent, community-based booksellers, regional and small press publishers, and our local librarians are part of the creative process.  They find books that readers read, encourage and promote local authors, publicize important books, keep out-of-print books in circulation, and act as a community resource.  They listen to the needs of their community because they are a part of that community. Their number and diversity is important.  it is only when there are many independent bookshops, secure libraries, and publishers willing to take risks, that we can be sure that a diversity of viewpoints will be heard.

Amazon would be founded the following year, somewhat poetically on July 5, 1994.  Not a single website listed on this map.

A fine ephemeral look at the book culture prior to the modern search technologies.
