Hand Drawn During The Siege of Vicksburg

Detailed hand drawn map / field sketch showing troop positions during the siege of Vicksburg, during the American Civil War.  

The map locates troop positions, Rebel Works, topographical features, bridges and other features during the siege.

The verso notes that the map illustrates "the position of the II Brig[ade], 1 Div[ision] A[rtillery] C[Company] during the siege of Vicksburg."

The First Division was commanded by General William Tecumseh Sherman.  The Second Brigade was commanded by Colonel Charles R. Woods (note Fort Woods at top left corner marked IV in red) and consisted of:

  • 12th Missouri Infantry, Col. Hugo Wangelin
  • 76th Ohio, Lt. Col. William B. Woods
  • 17th Missouri Infantry, Col. Francis Hassendeubel (mw), Lt. Col. John F. Cramer 
  • 3rd Missouri Infantry, Lt. Col. Theodore M. Meumann
  • 25th Iowa Infantry, Col. George A. Stone
  • 31st Iowa Infantry, Col. William Smith 

The plan also notes the location of wreck of the U.S.S. Cincinnati, was sunk at Vicksburg on May 27, 1863.
