1641 circa Henricus Hondius / Jan Jansson

Interesting forgery of the Hondius-Jansson North America, probably done by an Italian artist.

Burden (#245) suggests that the forgery was done at the end of the 17th or beginning of the 18th century, however, it might have been made later than that.

The map is a close re-engraving of the Hondius' American Septentrionalis.

Burden's entry for the original map includes this note on the forgery:

There exists a reproduction of this map that itself appears to originate from the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century. It bears the curious imprint lower left Amstelodami Excusum apud Judocum et Henricum Hondium. Anno 1631. As Jodocus Hondius Jr. had died in 1629 this is an obvious error. The quality of the engraving is of a poor standard. On closer examination it appears to be of Italian origin.
