Description

Vancouver Island called Isle de Quadra et van Couver!

Rare map of America, published in Amsterdam by then 100 year old publishing firm of Mortier, Covens & Fils, founded by Pierre Mortier at the end of the 17th Century.

The map is probably best dated by the inclusion of Vancouver's recent discoveries in the 1790s and the illustration of Louisiana as apparently still French, prior to the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.

The eastern remnants of the Bay of the West can still be seen west of P. van Couver, along with a fragment of the no longer theorized River of the West (R. de l'Ouest).  A line of Hudson Bay Company Forts appears below Lake Winnipeg.

Vancouver island is I. de Quadra et van Couver, a reference to the period of time when Vancouver was occupied by the Spanish under Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quarda, who welcomed the arrival of George Vancouver in August 1792. The island was named Quadra's and Vancouver's Island in commemoration of the friendly negotiations held in 1792 by Spanish commander of the Nootka Sound settlement, Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra, and by British naval captain George Vancouver, during the Nootka Crisis. Bodega y Quadra's name was eventually dropped from the name. It is one of several North American locations named after George Vancouver, who explored the Pacific Northwest coast between 1791 and 1794.

In the same region, the names "N. Cornouallis", "N Hanovre" and "N. George" appear, short lived English named geographical regions centered on Puget Sound, with New Norfolk further north.

Rarity

We locate examples at the Athenaeum Bibliotheek, Bibliothek Universsiteit Van Amsterdram and Bibliotheque Nationale de France, with a date range given between 1794 and circa 1800.  The earlier dating seems unlikely, given the use of Quarda y Vancouver Island.

This is the first time we have ever seen the map offered for sale.
