Description

Ottoman-Venetian War Manuscript Map of the Rio Morea Castle.

Excellent Venetian manuscript map of the castle at Rio, on the Peloponnese, in Greece. Executed between the Six and Seventh Ottoman-Venetian Wars, to show the build-up of fortifications in the area.

The top of the map includes an overview plan of the fortifications, while the bottom is a bird's eye profile of the fort, looking over it to the north.

The Rio Castle was built at the closest point between the Peloponnese and mainland Greece in the west. Opposite the Rio Castle was the Antirrio Castle.

Francesco Grimani was the Governor of Morea from 1706 to 1708.

Condition Description

Several sections of dampstaining. Some edgewear, including mounting holes. Backed on old, probably original, linen.
