Celebrating The Dutch Trading Routes To the East Indies

Fine map of Africa, the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia, celebrating the opening of the sea routes from Europe to the Dutch East Indies, following the voyage of Cornelis Houtman in 1597.

Houtman's expedition, which passed through the Sunda Strait, bypassing the Portuguese controlled Malacca Strait and thereby opening up trading opportunities for Dutch traders in the region, assuring the ascent of Amsterdam to a world trading power and commerce center.

In 1611 Isaac Pontanus, published his Rerum et urbis Amstelodamensium historia in Amsterdam. This map comes out of the even rarer Dutch translation "Historische beschrijvinghe der seer wijt beroemde coop-stadt Amsterdam" published in 1614 by Hondius. It is the earliest historical description of Amsterdam, its maritime history and institutions. This finely engraved map is extremely rare, as is the book by Pontanus.

Includes costumed figures showing the indigenous peoples of:

  • Ethiopia
  • Guinea
  • Persia
  • Turkey
  • Molucas
  • Java
  • Sumatra
  • Mallaca
  • China (2 people)

A nice example of this scarce map, which is now quite scarce on the market.
