Description

Scarce map of South East Asia, engraved by Antoine de Winter (c.1652-1707).

The map is based upon Frederick De Wit's Tabula Indiae Orientalis, engraved by Joannes Lhulier. De Winter copied a later edition of the De Wit map, c1680 (or later), and made some significant changes. Most of China, India, Ceylon, the Indian Ocean and Australia (Hollandia Nova) were removed, as well as De Wit's name. Also, the cartouche was moved from top right to bottom left, and engraved in mirror-image with the archer on the right and the man with the ermine-trimmed toque on the left.

The map appeared in Des Welt-beruhmten Adami Olearii colligirte und vermehrte Reise-Beschreibungen : bestehend in der nach Musskau und Persien ... , a later and enlarged edition of the popular travel narrative first published in 1647 by Adam Olearius (1603-1671), a German scholar and diplomat, who visited Moscow and Isfahan on a number of journeys between 1634 and 1643.
