Description

World War I-Era Air Map of Germany.

Among the earliest aviation maps of Germany, illuminating the birth of the German air industry and aerial warfare forces.

The map covers the German Empire as of 1914, with insets of the areas around Berlin, Munich, and Dusseldorf.

The map was very likely prepared as a piece of wartime British intelligence and distributed to important military commanders.

English-Language Map Key Overlay

This example of the map is particularly intriguing as it boasts an English-language printed key onlaid over the original German key.

The key incudes an "Explanation of Signs.": Shed with 2 doors; Shed with 1 door; Way in; Revolving shed; Guiding light; W.T. Station; Aerodrome; Flying Ground; Public Meteorological Station; Landing place with sheds; Under construciton; Anchorage for airships.

Importantly, the map has numerous areas marked in blue that represent "Areas prohibited to all aircraft (German included)."

Red markers are military, blue markers represent private installations.

"Meteorological Observatories" for information to Aeronauts are shown, as are Aerological Stations and Imperial Aeronautical Observatory.
