Description

With an Illustration of the Ottumwa Coal Palace!

Interesting and relatively large antique map of Ottumwa, Iowa, published in Ottumwa in 1893.

The map is traced over in red-ink manuscript, including in the center of town where it places an office and house. The manuscript author also makes mention of a coal mine to the south of the town.

The map also includes eight vignettes vies of local landmark buildings including factories and the "New Y.M.C.A. Building".

Coal mining was so important to the local economy that, from 1890 to 1892, the Coal Palace was erected in Ottumwa as an exhibition center. It is illustrated in a vignette on the map.

An inset map in the lower right illustrates Ottumwa as the center of an extensive regional railroad network.

The map includes very detailed information on landowners and subdivision.

The map was lithographed in Philadelphia by F. Bourquin.
