Description

Antique Map of Rome

Finely executed map of Rome, locating both its ancient and modern landmarks.

The map is surrounded by vignettes of Ancient Rome, in the style of Giambattista Nolli's map of 1748.

Paul Letaroully was a pupil of Charles Percier and Pierre-FranAois-Lèonard Fontaine at the Ecole des Beaux-arts. In 1819 he was appointed architect inspector of rebuilding of the Theatre Odeon. In 1820 he made a trip to Italy, from which he made his work, Modern edifices de Rome: ou recueil des palais, maisons, Eglises, couvents, and autres monuments publics and particulars, plus the remarquables of the ville de Rome, which appeared between 1840 and 1855, illustrated with engravings of the buildings of Rome.
