Description

Scarce map of northern Canada and the Polar Regions, showing the efforts to locate John Franklin.

Franklin set out in search of the Northwest Passage in 1845, with an expedition of 134 men in two ships, Erebus and Terror. They were last seen in July 1847 waiting to enter the ice of Baffin Bay.

Franklin's wife was politically connected and encouraged an extensive search for her husband. No fewer than 32 vessels were sent out by England to search for them and it was not until 1854 that the first clues emerged as to the fate of the expedition. The map shows the positions and tracks of numerous ships and explorers including Capt. Collinson, Lt. De Haven, Dr. Kane, the ships HMS Phoenix and Investigator. Locates the position where the Resolute and Intrepid were abandoned in 1854.

Large inset "Discoveries in and North of Wellington Channel…" Insets show the HMS Phoenix, a polar bear, ice hummocks and "The Three Graves at Beechey I."
