Description

Scarce colonial map of North Carolina, based upon John Collet map, which appeared in the Universal Magazine.

Shows towns, counties, rivers, lakes, mountains, inlets, islands, etc.

The map covers all of North Carolina westward to Table [Rock] Mountain in the Blue Ridge Mountains, near the present site of Morganton.

John Collet's map greatly surpassed in accuracy and scope any prior map of the region and records the great westward movement of population up to and across the Piedmont during the middle of the 18th Century. Collet's map became the source map for all maps of North Carolina for the next 40 years, until the issuance of the Price-Strother map in 1808. The Granville District shown on Collet's map is based upon surveys and information gathered by the Granville District Surveyor, William Churton. Many of the soundings off the coast were also probably supplied by Churton.

Henry Mouzon relied upon the map almost exclusively for his map of the Carolinas. Collet's map is based upon a manuscript by Collet, which he drew in 1768.
