Description

Unrecorded plan of Amsterdam, published circa 1650.

The plan shows the city center with both the old city walls and the proposed new fortifications prominently depicted at left.

The map is similar to an important early map of Asterdam by Claes Jansson Visscher, published in 1623.

One of the buildings shown ('t Lands Magasyn") is the office of the Dutch Admiralty, suggesting that the publisher may have been a publisher of Sea Charts.  The sheet is further embellished by a vignette at bottom featuring numerous sailing ships and docks in the busy port.

The map may have been commissioned by the City of Amsterdam.  The area of the Fourth Explanation has been added shortly after the final infill had had been laid out.   The contents of the map image of the city center is derived from a map by Johannes Janssonius, who in turn relied on a view of Joan Blaeu, who was then a member of the city council of Amsterdam and was part of a committee advising on the expansion of the city.  Literature:   .
