Description

Early Manuscript Copy of a 17th Century Map of the Second Siege of Vienna

Hand drawn example of the upper half of Heinrich Schmidt's map of the second Siege of Vienna.

Schmidt's unusual work presents a rounded view of the area outside of Vienna's city walls, at the time of the Turkish siege of Vienna in 1683. Vienna is surrounded by encampments and fortified positions, identifying various positions.

The plan is copied from an original dedicated to Ernst Rüdiger von Starhemberg (1638-1701), the defender of the second Turkish siege of Vienna in 1683, Imperial General during the Great Turkish War and President of the War Council, who was awarded the Order of the Golden Fleece in December in 1683.

This example would seem to be a hand-drawn copy of Schmidt's work. The map is drawn on paper which would clearly seem to pre-date the Albert Camesina copy and would therefore almost certainly be copied and drawn directly from the only known example of the Schmidt map.

We have  been unable to find an images of the original Schmidt for comparative purposes.  However, comparing it to the Camesina facsimile, published in 1864, it would seem that this copy is unfinished.
