The Best 19th Century Mapping of Southampton, New York.

Two separately-issued, hand-colored lithographed maps, each comprised of two sheets of treated linen, altogether constituting a general and specific mapping of Southampton, New York.

The first illustrated map focuses on the Village of Southampton, between Shinnecock Bay and the Old Town Pond. This map delineates individual plots of land and shows major buildings and landowners.  The beaches are shown pictorially. Dune Road does not yet extend west between the Bay and the Atlantic.

The second, larger-scale, map shows the township of Southampton, also including Water Mill, Bridgehampton, Sagaponack, and Hampton Bays. It features an inset of Bridgehampton.

Beers published smaller-format maps of Southampton in his 1873 Atlas of Long Island, but these large, separately-issued maps are rare; we have found a set at the Southampton History Museum.  No copies located in OldMaps or RBH.

Hand-colored lithographs on treated linen, with original selvage and gilt-lettered calf case (slightly worn).
