Description

A Promotional Brochure and Map for the Nome Gold Diggings Prepared For The 1901 Season

Rare folding map and promotional brochure of Alaska, promoting the Pacific Steam Whaling Company.

The map identifies the steamer routes of the Pacific Steam Whaling Company and the location of the company's canneries and whaling stations.  On the verso of the map is an extensive promotional brochure, including numerous photographs, promotional details for Valdez and the Copper River District, and Account of the S. S. Jeanie's Trip to Nome in 1899 and Captain Mason's Report regarding the trip and a detailed map of the area between Prince William Sound and the Yukon River.

The map is overprinted extensively in red with details on the Gold and Silver regions between Prince William Sound and the Yukon River, with a note in Purple identifying "Waldez" (Valdez).

The map includes a large inset map of the Cape Nome Gold Fields.  Further to the north, the Kougarok Gold District is shown.

In the Aleutians, an area of "Gold Quartz" is shown in the area of Unga Island.

In Shelikof Strait, a note states "United States Mail Route Overland during Winter Months Ktami to Noma and St. Michaels."

Rarity

The Pacific Steam Whaling Company apparently issued maps in 1897, 1900 and 1901.  OCLC locates 4 examples of the 1897 edition and 1 example of the 1900 edition, neither of which apparently includes the details on Nome.

This edition, focusing on the route to Nome with photographs and an inset map, is apparently unrecorded.
