Description

Showing The Berkeley Radiation Laboratory in 1939

Rare pictorial map of the Berkeley campus, by Artist Milt Schenkovsky (UC Berkeley class of 1937).

The map provides a detailed treatment of Berkeley and the University of California Campus in the whimsical style which Schenkovsky would employ in his later and more famous works.

Of particular note, in the center of the map, is an illustration titled "Prof Lawrence Bombards Atom," noting Ernest Lawrence's research on Uranium enrichment, directly out from of the "Radiation Laboratories."

Milt Schenkovsky was a cartoonist and illustrator apparently based in the San Francisco Bay area and active during the 1930s and 1940s. He also illustrated humor books and published his own book of poems called Virgin Sturgeon.  One of his best works is the Merry-maker's Map of San Francisco, issued in 1940.
