1730 circa Jeremias Wolff & Johann Friedrich Probst
$ 5,400.00

Rare view of Istanbul, published in Augsburg by Johann Friedrich Probst and Jeremiah Wolff.

The view is looking south across the Golden Horn, with the Pera (Beyoglu) and Galata neighborhoods on the North side in the foreground.

The view is embellished with sailing ships and elegantly costumed locals in the foreground, the one at the far left smoking a pipe and a sentry guarding the gate at the far right.

A shipyard can been seen on the banks for the river toward the left, evidence of the thriving Ottoman ship building industry in the 17th and 18th Centuries.

This exceptional view locates over 26 different points of interest noted in the key below the view (in Latin and German).

This is one of two Probst views of Istanbul.  Georg Balthasar Probst issued a similar view, but with a different coat of arms and other minor differences, which is of a bit lesser quality.
