A Portuguese Chart of Goa and Environs
Rare Portuguese language chart of the area around the Island of Goa, published in Lisbon.
The chart shows the port of Goa, on the southwest coast of India, published in 1844, just one year after the Portuguese moved the capital to Panaji from Velha Goa Key topographic features on the chart include Panaji, the Mandovi River, Zauri River, Provincia de Salcette, and Provincia de Bardez. Seventeen important locations on the map are identified alphabetically on the chart and are explained in a legend at right.
The chart was apparently drawn by Antonio Lopes da Costa Almeida (1784-1859), barão de Reboredo. Among his many credits Antonio da Costa Almeida was associated with the Academy of Guardas-Marinhas and the Naval Artillery.
The most interesting portion on this lithographed antique chart are the eight charming and naïve elevation views placed at the top of the print. These views include: Vistas das casas das Freiras, Vistas das casas de D. Joanna, and Vista das Cruz du Betim.
The map is apparently a reduced copy of a Navigational map published by order of the Portuguese government in Goa, and credited to "Engenheiro Francisco Monteiro Cabral, in 1842, which was published with a set of sailing directions.
The present map appeared in a serial publication entitled Annaes Maritimeos e Coloniaes, in an article entitled. "Esclarecimentos Hydrographicos para intelligencia e uso do Plano dos Portos de Goa e Mormogao" in Annaes Maritimos e Colonias.
Rarity
The map is very rare on the market. This is the first example we have ever seen.
