A Rare Map of the US Showing the Routes To the Gold Regions
Highly detailed California Gold Rush era map of the United States, illustrating the connection from New Orleans to San Francisco, via the Trans-Union and Tehuantepec route.
The map shows a wide swath the Sierra Nevada Mountains as "Gold Region" from Mt. Tshastl (Shasta) south nearly toe Lake Tulare.
The present example has been outlined in blue by an early user, highlighting the railroad connections between East Coast, Midwest and New Orleans, then to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and on to San Francisco.
The primarly overland routes are also illustrated, Fremont's 1845 Route, Kearney's Route in 1846, Josiah Gregg's Route in 1840 and the Santa Fe Trail.
The map was published in 1851, to illustrate William M. Burwell's rare work, Memoir Explanatory of the Transunion and Tehuantepec Route between Europe and Asia, published in Washington in 1851.
