Description

Rare map of the mining regions around the Great Salt Lake, surounded by advertisements on all four sides; with the ads.

At the top of the map is a title reading "Zion's Co-operative Mercantile Institution."  Zion's Cooperative Mercantile Institution ( ZCMI) was the first department store in the United States. It was founded on October 9, 1868 by Brigham Young. For many years it used the slogan, "America's First Department Store".

Scarce map of northern Utah dominated by the Great Salt Lake, with Utah Lake and adjacent areas. The various mining districts (28 shown) are bordered in red and named.

There are four inset city/town plans, showing:

  • Ophir
  • Alta
  • Eureka City
  • Stockton.

The surrounding advertisements, for all manner of businesses, hotels, boarding houses, etc., are instructive in themselves. T

he title on the cover reads "New mining map of Utah : showing 28 prominent mining districts and location of the best known mines." Pencil name of H. Sill, Odgen, 1876, on the back of the map.   

Rarity

This is the first time we have ever seen the map offered for sale.   

Provenance:  PBA Galleries -- Warren Heckrotte Sale, purchased from Walter Reuben in January 1979.
