A elegant paddle steamer is shown cruising between St. Louis and New Orleans, with is two stacks billow dark smoke and two American flags fly proudly above its upper deck. Passengers are visible on the upper three decks, generally dress in elegant attire, while on the lowest deck, a mixed scene of workers and passengers can be seen, with wood piled high in the center of the lower deck and cargo and barrels stored a bit further forward.

The artist, Charles Parsons moved to New York City from England when he was nine years old and later became the head art director for Harper’s. He produced over 30 images for Currier & Ives and specialized in marine subjects.
