Description

Rare regional map, showing a route from Thunder Bay on Lake Superior through Lake of the Woods (in both northern Minnesota and Canada) and on to Fort Garry on the Red River, present site of the city of Winnipeg. No doubt the disclosure of this route here was instrumental in the development of Winnipeg.

Below the map is Hind's remarkably detailed diagram of the route that provides elevations and describes the nature of the geology en route. The large inset at top center provides greater detail for the area between Lake of the Woods and Fort Garry.

The map appeared in Hind's Report on a Topographical & Geological Exploration of the Canoe Route Between Fort William, Lake Superior, and Fort Garry, Red River... This Canadian expedition occurred in the summer of 1857. Simon James Dawson and Henry Youle Hind were part of the Canadian Exploration Expedition of 1857-58. The expedition surveyed and explored the country between Lake Superior and the Red River and from Lake Winnipeg to the Saskatchewan River.
