Description

Unrecorded circa 1892 Japanese-language brochure with map of Honolulu, Hawaii.

The work was published by the Honolulu YMCA, with an extensive guide to Honolulu on the verso, including photographs and a very early surfing photo: /gallery/detail/53174_1

The main map is centered on the Honolulu YMCA and shows the the surrounding downtown area, identifying streets, public transport, municipal buildings and more.

The map at the top extends from Diamond Head to Moana Loa Gardens and just beyond to the west.

To the left of the map proper are estimated taxi fares around the city, while at right a series of tables identify shops and other businesses of importance to the Japanese traveler. The verso contains photographs of important destinations, stereotypical Hawaiian scenes, and practical information for the tourist.

There are several dates on the back associated with the history of Japanese immigration to Hawaii, the latest of which is 1885. We date the map as circa 1892, based upon the photo of Queen Liliuokalani, who reigned from 1891 to 1893, before she was overthrown by an American and European led Coup in 1893 and later arrested by the US Government in 1895.
