Description

Fine example of Benedetto Marzolla's scarce map of of North America, published in Naples.

The map names and separately identifies the Republic of Texas (Repubblica del Texas), which is shaded in Blue, along with the US, Canadian, Mexican, English, Russian, French, Spanish, Danish Dutch and Swedish-Norwegian Colonies.

The 54-40 or Fight border between Oregon Territory and British Columbia is shown.

In the west, the mythical Rivers (Rio Jesus Maria and Rio de los Mongos) flowing to San Francisco from Lake Timpanagos (Salt Lake) and toward Lake Teguayo (Rio S. Gioacchino) are shown, pre-dating the first reports from Fremont's expedition.

The River systems in the west are quite well evolved, although pre-dating the improvements which would come in the 1850s with the Railroad Surveys.

In Western Canada, the forts and houses of the Hudson Bay Company appear, along with Indian details. Alaska is Russian America, with a small swath of land near Pto. Bodega (Fort Ross) still shown as Russian Territory as well.

Arizona, north of the Gila River is Paese Incognita (unkown country).

In all, a fine and highly detailed map, with extensive statistical information below.
