Description

An Early Example of Hessel Gerritsz's Map of Colombia and Panama

Fine map of the South American coastline, from Margarita Island and Trinidad off the coast of Venezuela, to northern Brazil, just beyond the mouth of the Orinoco River.

In the interior, on the west coast of Lake Parime, is Manoa o el Dorado, then believed to be the site of the legendary City of Gold.

Gerritsz' map of Panama served as a model for other cartographers throughout the rest of the century.

De Laet's map appeared in his seminal work on America, which is widely regarded as the most important and influential treatise on the subject published in the 17th century.

An essential map for collectors of this region.
