Description

Scarce report and map addressing the acquistion of the Kinsley Tract, a parcel of land which was added to West Point Military Academy in 1889.

The map identifies West Point in a rough sketch, with greater topographical detail shown for the Kinsley Tract to the south. Several roads are named, as is Highland Falls Village.

West Point's history began with its formation in March of 1802. In 1824, the contiguous Gridley Tract of 300 acres south of the original West Point lands was acquired. In 1879, the Government purchased Round Pond, to the west, in order to secure more a better water supply for the Academy.

The Kinsely Tract, which was south of the Gridley Tract, was added in 1889, adding 225 acres which extend to the present south gate of West Point, with the Kinlsey House used briefly to house married officers.

In 1903, the Dassori Tract was purchased, south of Gridley and west of the Kinsely Tract. In 1909, Constitution Island was donated to the Academy. Finally, in 1931, the West Point Land Acquisition Act was passed, which would triple the size of West Point's lands.
