Rare separately issued map of Philadelphia, published during the period when Philadelphia what the Capital of the United States.
The map provides a highly detailed look at the City of Philadelphia at the zenith of its importance as an American City.
Important places located on the map include:
- Congress Hall
- State House
- Synagogue
- Library
- Philosophical Hall
A number of churches, banks and other buildings are located.
The present example of the map was separately issued and bound into a French composite atlas. The map would later be incorporated into James Hardie's A Short Account of the City of Philadelphia, published in Philadelphia in 1794. Once source attributes the map ot Jacob Johnson. The map would later be re-engraved with a new title, Stephens Plan of the City of Philadelphia.
Hardie's A Short Account of the City of Philadelphia is extremely rare. We locate no examples of either the map or the book at auction or in dealer catalogs.
