Description

Detailed map of the northern part of California, exhibiting the route through the region being surveyed for a prospective Transcontinental Railroad.

The prospective route of the Railroad is prominently illustrated, passing above Pyramid Lake through the Sierras in the general direction of Mt. Shasta, before curving southwest and then south past Shasta City, Readings (Redding), Red Bluff (noted as the Head of Navigation on the Sacramento River), then south along the Sacramento River to the area where it joins the Yuba River, near Fremont.

A number of imporant early gold rush towns are located, including Marysville, Auburn, Colona, Placerville Downieville and Nevada (City).
