Description

A Remarkable Manuscript Wall Map of the San Francisco Bay Area

Finely executed manuscript wall map of the area around San Francisco Bay, executed by John E. Pope, a San Francisco Surveyor who would go on two years later to create the Pope-Kenna map of Big Basin.

The map provides a fine overview of the Bay area and adjacent counties, extending north to Santa Rosa, west to Livermore and San Jose and south to the northern part of Santa Cruz County (including Big Basin).

The map has been annotated after 1910 and includes several later features:

  • Treasure Island
  • Oakland Bay Bridge
  • Golden Gate Bridge
  • Highway Bridge in Mill Valley (northwest of Belvedere)
  • San Mateo Bridge
  • Extension of terminus on a number of East Bay rail lines into SF Bay (but not showing extensions of landfill)

The map was apparently the subject of at least one attempt at photolithography, based upon the brown areas at the bottom of the map, which would seem to be places were temporary titles and/or revisions were pasted down.

John E. Pope is perhaps best known for 1912 map of Big Basin State Park, which is generally regarded the earliest and most detailed mapping of Big Basin, created for a particular purpose, other than to establish the exterior boundaries of the region's Townships, Ranges, and Sections. The map title is Map of California Redwood Park The Big Basin Santa Cruz County, California. Pope is also known to have made several maps of the Mission Santa Clara area in 1921.

The map is apparently unrecorded. There is evidence that pastedowns were added for photo-lithographic reproduction and we also note evidence of an earlier (erased) title, "Greater San Francisco Terminal Site."
