Description

Rare first edition of Engel's map of North America, issued in his Memoires Observations Geographiques in 1765. This rare and relatively obscure large format map of North America was the model for Diderot's map of North America, which was issued in 1770 and after and is one of the most recognizable maps of the North America from the latter part of the 18th Century. While the Diderot edition is quite well kwown, this source map rarely appears on the market. It includes a marvelous series of rivers which traverse the country, hopefully, but ultimately futilely searching for a continuous waterway from the Atlantic to the Pacific. This is without doubt one of the last great source maps for mythological cartography along the NW Coast of America and in the Transmississippi West. Kershaw 122. An excellent acquisition for NW Coast and North American Collectors.
