Description

Rare first edition of this important early midwestern guide map, published by Phelps & Squire.

In this rare first state, Sioux Country and Brown County are shown to the north of Illinois, pre-dating the appearance of Wisconsin Territory in this section of the map, although Wisconsin Territory is shown in the lower right inset.

The northern part of Illinois also includes Joe Davies County and a section called "Attached to Joe Daviess County", along with section referred to as "Attached to La Salle County" and "Attached to Cook County."

The cartographic detail in northern Illinois and the parts adjacent (west of the Mississippi and north of the Illinois-Wisconsin Territory Line), would be significantly altered in the subsequent editions of the map.

The broadside traveller's guide includes remarks on the history, geography, "face of the country," products and manufactures, internal improvements, population, general remarks for emigrants, and price of passage from New York to various cities in the four states.

The map is apparently quite rare on the market. We show no examples listed in recorded auction records or dealer catalogs, with the 1841 most recently appearing at auction in 1990.
